Head in the sand…not quite. Ostriches have been observed swallowing sand and small stones, possibly to aid digestion.

I seem to remember that the whole “head in the sand” thing started out as “head in a bush” with someone philosophising that ostriches did the whole “I can’t see you so you can’t see me” thing.

There’s nothing quite like humans’ assumption about animal behaviour.
